Church of the Holy Comforter, Pennywise Jewelry Sale
When: Sunday, 20 November
Location: Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, VA.
Information: The Pennywise organization determined to provide all the profits from their November estate jewelry sale to VMF. VMF members Michele Khol & Dutch and Mike Turner & Josh will represent VMF at this fundraising sale on 20 November at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna.

2016 Kappa Sigma Champion’s Weekend
When: Saturday, 19 November
Location: Kappa Sigma Fraternity Foundation in Charlott4sville, VA
Information: VMF has been invited to participate in this annual gathering of representatives for Kappa Sigma chapters from across the United States.  Kappa Sigma’s Military Heroes Campaign has been a key donor and supporter of VMF for several years - this event provides VMF the opportunity to meet and talk with Kappa Sigma officers and staff as well as the chapter representatives. VMF will be represented by Mike Dorula, Blake Myers, Donna Dorula & Vincent, Dana Richardson & Eagle and Danielle Alexander & Lance.

The Square Plate Project Fundraiser.
When: 1-27 November
Location: 911 Charles Street in Fredericksburg

VMF partnered with Artful Dimensions Gallery, a nonprofit gallery in Fredericksburg, Virginia whose mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of three-dimensional arts, in co-sponsoring The Square Plate Project from August thru October.  During this time period experienced and novice artists and dog lovers purchased a blank square plate, take it home and turn their plate into a unique works of art.  Artful Dimensions kicked off The Square Plate Project Show at their gallery on Friday, 4 November as part of Fredericksburg First Friday.  Thanks to VMF members Mike Turner & Josh, Tangy Mooney & Napper and Blake Myers for representing VMF!  The Square Plate Project Show runs through 27 November - Artful Dimensions is donating $10 from the purchase of each plate, plus 15% of the sale price for each plate sold during The Square Plate Project Show to VMF.  Thank you Artful Dimensions Gallery for your support of VMF!


2016 Cocktails with Canines
When: Saturday November 5 6:00pm – 9:00 pm
Location: Crowne Plaza (Tysons Corner) 1960 Chain Bridge Road, McLean (Virginia)

Almost 200 people attended VMF’s annual celebration and charity event Cocktails with Canines, including veterans and their VMF service dogs, our puppy raisers and trainers and our current group of six Assistance Dogs in Training (ADITs), our Board of Directors and staff, and the wonderful supporters, donors and sponsors that enable VMF’s success in providing service dogs and canine therapy services to Veterans.

The highlight of the evening was the video, “A Service Dog and His Veteran, produced by Jasmine Cen and Yunfei Zhao, followed by veteran Maureen Normann and her service dog, Prince.  Maureen shared her personal story in a comedy routine she developed while attending Comedy Bootcamp in March 2016.  The past eight months have been a comedy show whirlwind for Maureen, as she has had the opportunity to share what she learned at Comedy Bootcamp in a variety of venues with fellow Veterans.  Just a few days prior to Cocktails with Canines attendees, Maureen performed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!

During the evening’s program, we highlighted VMF’s accomplishments during the past year to include the opening of our new Canine Training and Veteran Support Center - a key milestone which will enable VMF to support more veterans in the coming years.

A special thank you to our donors, whose steadfast support since VMF’s founding has allowed VMF to continue providing truly life changing and life saving services to our Nation’s veterans.  Two of our long-time donors and corporate supporters, Pamela Hormell from TRAX International, and Derek Marchman from Kappa Sigma National Fraternity, presented donation checks during the evening’s program and spoke to the audience about their commitment to veterans and giving back, and their support of VMF.

Finally, thank you to the VMF volunteers who spent months preparing for Cocktails with Canines and to those that supported the event on Nov 5th, and to our emcee for the evening, Jonathan Elias from ABC7/WJLA-TV, our musical guests, The Outpatients, Shelley Castle who has provided the beautiful photographs of VMF’s canines over the years and event photographers Sandrah Pederson, Jerry Smith, and Brittany Oliver.


George Mason University (GMU) Veteran Resource Center
When: Wednesday, November 9, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Location: GMU Main Campus, Student Union 1 (SU 1)

GMU conducted its inaugural Veteran Resource Center event hosted by the GMU’s Military Services Office.  The event, at GMU’s Fairfax Main Campus in Student Union 1, was designed to provide GMU veteran students with knowledge of the resources available to them as veterans.  We were delighted to be invited to participate in this veteran-focused event, and to have the opportunity to inform attending veterans about VMF, our mission and services offered, and how veterans can connect with VMF. Thank you GMU, and Beryl Brodsky, Donna Dorula & Vincent and Rachel Carrig & Finn for representing VMF so well!

FHWA Veteran Day Commemoration
When: Wednesday, November 9
Location: FHWA’s Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division in Sterling
VMF participated in the Veterans Day commemoration held in FHWA’s Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division in Sterling – the office where VMF’s own Leanne Siegfried works.  VMF was ably represented by Leanne, Michele Khol, Randi DeWeese & Albie, Nancy Tang & Kirby, Mike Turner & Josh, and Jill Baker & Dutch – thank you VMF Team and FHWA!


City of Manassas Annual Veterans Day Parade
When: Saturday, November 12, 11:00 am
Location: Old Town Manassass

For the second consecutive year VMF participated in the City of Manassas Annual Veterans’ Day Parade.  Parade participants included our own ‘VMF Float’ and many of our volunteers, ADITs and Therapy Dog Teams.  Thank you Jodi and Jen Hamilton, Leann Seigfried, Mike Dorula, Suzanne Ager, Rebecca Renner, Donna Dorula & Vincent, Randi and Steve DeWeese & Albie, Mike Turner & Josh, Joe Hurst & Finn, Manassas Park Middle School students Ben & Emma, Amy, Dawson, James and Nancy Tang & Kirby.

CrossFit Hardshells Fundraiser – Sweat for Vets.
When: Saturday, November 12
Location: Gaithersburg, MD
VMF members Blake Myers and Danielle Alexander & Lance participated in a fundraiser to benefit VMF, organized by Avery Apatoff, daughter of Kappa Sigma member Adam Apatoff.  Thank you Avery and CrossFit Hardshells for your support of VMF!


Joshua’s Hands Fall Festival
When: Saturday, October 8, 10 am – 5:00 pm
Location: 38327 Charles Town Pike, Waterford, VA 20197
Information: VMF will be joining Joshua’s Hands in their annual Fall Festival, offered free to the general public.  The work of Joshua’s Hands is five fold – like the fingers on your hand: Fall Festival (annual free gift to the community), American Heritage Education, Community Service, Teen Safe Driving and Scholarships. What’s not to like? Join us on October 8th from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.  The Festival will include an old-fashioned Spelling Bee, live entertainment, hay rides, crafts, demonstrations, a petting farm, obstacle course and so much more! Vienna Presbyterian Church (VPC) Annual Outreach Day.

Location: Vienna Presbyterian Church's
Information: On Sunday, September 25th, VMF's Canine Team took part in Vienna Presbyterian Church's Outreach Festival. The Canine Team provided 30-minute sessions prior to each Sunday service. VPC is one of the great supporters of VMF - providing many volunteers for VMF, rooms for our volunteer and staff training and orientation sessions, support and transportation for veterans during their interview process, key members of our Dulles Center 'build-out team', and so much more. This was a terrific opportunity for VMF to give back to VPC, as well as to showcase several of our ADITs. Thank you Michele Khol & Dutch, Donna Dorula & Vincent and Mike Turner & Josh for supporting VPC, and thank you VPC for all your support of VMF!

People of Distinction Humanitarian Awards (PDHA) 2016 Honoree Award Reception and Dinner

Information: On Tuesday, Sep 13, 2016, Veterans Moving Forward, Inc. was among a dozen individuals and organizations recognized as Unsung Heroes, receiving a 2016 People of Distinction Humanitarian Award from the People of Distinction Humanitarian Awards (PDHA). Radio personality and People of Distinction Humanitarian Awards (PDHA) founder, Al Cole, hosted the ceremony and reception at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington DC. Thank you to Ken & Jennie Dowd, Lyn Sherlock, Mike and Donna Dorula & Vincent, Bob Rosencranz, Deb Harney, Rene Hernandez, Greg Warfield, Larry Grayer and Joe Hurst for representing VMF and participating in the PDHA 2016 Awardees Reception.Thank you PDHA and congratulations to the entire VMF Team!

Marsh USA 9/11 Commemoration & Fundraising Event.
When: 9 September
Location: Marsh USA local Office
Information: Marsh & McLennan lost 358 colleagues and consultants on 9/11 in the World Trade Center. In remembrance of these lost colleagues and the 15th anniversary of 9/11, Marsh USA conducted a Day of Giving in their local office on 9 September 2016 and designated VMF as the recipient of the proceeds raised on this day. Thank you Marsh USA and Lyn Sherlock for representing VMF!

National Purple Heart Day at Mount Vernon
When: Sunday 7 August, 12:30 – 3:00 pm
Location: Mount Vernon, Smith Auditorium
Information: VMF volunteers will provide an information table at the National Purple Heart Day ceremonies at Mount Vernon on 7 Aug in the Smith Auditorium. Ceremony starts with pre-ceremony music at 1240, official ceremony starting at 1300. A wreath laying ceremony will follow at the Purple Heart Monument located at the entrance to Mount Vernon, and then a reception for PH recipients and guests in the Mount Vernon Inn.
Thank you to the Greater Washington Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) for allowing VMF to join you and Mount Vernon for these ceremonies!

Square Plate Project
When: Aug – Oct; Kick Off Event is Friday 5 Aug, 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Location: Artful Dimensions Gallery, 911 Charles Street, Fredericksburg, VA
Information: Participants buy a square plate (11"x11") for $25, then decorate their plate (a "bisque" ceramic plate that is unglazed but fired) in any way they desire: paint it, collage stuff on it, glue stuff on it, add sculptures to it as the muse inspires. Bring the plate back to be featured in an exhibit during October if the person wishes to do so.

Heroes on the River

Information: A Private Event for veterans with PTSD and combat veterans – supporting organizations include VA, American Legion, Boulder Crest, Project Healing Waters, and VMF.

Canine Training and Veteran Support Center Grand Opening & Open House

Frontlines to the Homefront (Oatlands and WWII)
When: Saturday July 9 10:00am- 4:00pm and Sunday July 10 11:00am – 3:00 pm
Location: Oatlands National Historic Site
Information: VMF with other veteran’s organizations and non-profits will be present to share information. Other activities and exhibits include uniformed WWII reenactors, military vehicles, games for kids, and a BBQ. This event is free for active duty and retired veterans. Admission is $10 per person, or $20 per family.

National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) Family Day
When: Friday, June 24 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

Spartan Weekend
When: Thursday – Sunday, May 5-8
Location: Fort Belvoir
Information: VMF partnered with 10+ other non-profit organizations committed to assisting veterans at Spartan Weekend - an outreach event focused on ending suicide among veterans. Activities during the weekend included a golf tournament, memorial bike ride, Kristi Lee Cook concert at DC’s Hard Rock Cafe, and a Mother’s Day service at the Vietnam Memorial in DC to honor attending GoldStar mothers.
