Raise a Puppy

Volunteer Puppy Raisers are needed — helping to raise puppies for VMF will enable us to provide service dogs to veterans with physical and mental health challenges.

Raise a PuppyRole of Puppy Raiser

Socialization is an important part of training an assistance dog and needs to begin as early as possible. In addition to seeing to the care and health of the puppy, the Puppy Raiser begins the training process, including crate-training, house training, obedience classes and manners.

How to Apply

If you are interested in becoming a VMF Puppy Raiser, please download and complete the Puppy Raiser Application to the left and send to us via one of the following methods:

divider Train a Dog

Train a dog to participate in visits to hospitals and rehabilitation centers for veterans. Take the Delta Society® "Pet Partners Team Evaluation with Skills and Aptitude Assessment" and join Veterans Moving Forward's team of volunteers.

Raise a PuppyRole of Dog Handler/Trainer

While our Puppy Raiser program allows volunteers to care for VMF-owned Assistance Dogs in Training (ADITs), many of our volunteer staff have preferred to train their own pets to reach service dog standards of certification in behavior, manners, and visitation skills. We will be happy to provide you with guidance in seeing that process through to completion, and our community of quality dog owners and animal-assisted therapy giver teams is a wonderful resource from which to learn and develop successful skills for dog ownership and service animal handlership.

How to Apply

If you are interested in raising your own pet to meet VMF's standards for animal-assisted activity and therapy visitation, please download and complete the Comfort Dog Application to the left and send to us via one of the following methods:

> Email to volunteer@vetsfwd.org
> Mail to Veterans Moving Forward, Inc.
    P.O. Box 404, Catharpin, VA 20143
> Send via fax to 703.754.0967
